Govt mulls raise in superannuation age of its employees | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 1: A high level official committee, headed by Chief Secretary Madhav Lal, which was set up to examine the demands of employees with regard to enhancement of retirement age, is said to have recommended an increase in the retirement age by one to two years. Knowledgeable circles in the civil secretariat said that the committee members were initially in favour of raising the retirement age for state Government employees by two years to bring them at a par with the retirement age of central Government employees but it has favoured at least one year raise in view of the financial impact it can have on the state exchequer. Employees unions have conveyed to the Govern-ment that most of the states have raised the retirement age of their employees to 60 years. They have also conveyed to the NC led Government that in various states retirement age of doctors and university and college teachers had been raised to 62 years and the central Government too was considering a proposal for increasing the retirement age of its employees to 62 years. The main problem the Government in Jammu and Kashmir is the ever increasing wage and pension bill for which the state has to bank on financial support from the centre. The annual pension and salary bill has touched Rs.13470 in 2011 which indicates that a major chunk of state's resources and central Government assistance is spent on meeting the wage and pension bill. However, the high level committee has recommended to the Government that one to two year's increase in retirement age is likely to pacify the employees who have been on warpath during the last two years despite the fact that more than 90 per cent of their demands had been conceded. The report would be discussed by the cabinet subcommittee and its recommendations would be considered by the cabinet. Indications are that the cabinet is likely to accept the retirement age on one hand and on the other explore the possibility of expanding job avenues for the educated unemployed youth whose number has touched seven lakhs. |
