2177 women facing various sections of RPC in Jails of J&K

JAMMU, May 2: Nearly 2177 women have been booked under various sections of RPC in Jammu and Kashmir during last two years in the state, with nearly eight foreign women lodged in various jails.
As per the data provided by the government, 405 women have been arrested in various sections of law for rioting followed by outraging the modesty of women with 133 members of fair sex arrested by police during last two years.
In Kashmir valley, about 633 women have been arrested by the law enforcement agencies while Jammu region has the highest number of women in Jails with 1544 of them arrested by police.
"There are four women from Pakistan and 4 Burma who are serving their sentence in Jammu and Kashmir, mostly arrested on the border while trying to cross over to Pakistan or India", says the data. Nearly 55 women have been arrested in murder cases, attempt to Murder, 62 during 2009-10 and 2010-11. Abetment to kidnapping and abduction, 48, in stabbing cases, 122, booked for assaulting public servants, 17, abetment to suicide, 84 obscene act in public places, 15.
One women has been arrested in arson case in 2010 while 8 of them have been detained for burglary.
Under Public Safety Act (PSA)-1978 three women which include two foreigners and one India are detained under the act. Among the 633 women arrested in Kashmir, 163 are below the Age of 25, 203 between age group of (26-35), 199 falling in age of group (36-45) and 68 are above the age of 48.
In Jammu region, 305 are below the age of (25), 458 of those arrested fall under the age group of (26-35), 570 fall between age of (36-45) while 211 are above 46 years of age.
However there are no political prisoners lodged in jails outside the state and most of them have been lodged in the state.
