Quitting J&K? | Five disturbing developments -- II | | Neha JAMMU, May 2: Defence Minister AK Antony told the Lok Sabha on the same day that India and Pakistan have agreed to hold "meaningful and result-oriented discussion to demilitarise Siachen glacier region where 26 soldiers died during deployment last year". In a written reply, the Defence Minister said, "The number of casualties in Siachen in last one year is 26" and added that "12th round of Defence Secretary-level talks were held between India and Pakistan on May 30-31, 2011... It was agreed to continue the discussions in a meaningful and result-oriented manner." "Both sides (India and Pakistan) welcome the ongoing dialogue process which is contributing to an enhanced understanding of each other's position," he, in addition, said in his written reply. Sadly, there was no discussion on what the Defence Minister told the Lok Sabha. Why? Why? What exactly the Defence Minister meant by "meaningful and result-oriented discussion to demilitarise Siachen glacier region? Did he mean the willingness of the Congress-dominated UPA Government to accept the Pakistani demand seeking demilitarisation of the strategic Siachen glacier the Indian forces wrested from Pakistan after the very successful Meghdoot Operation and making supreme sacrifices in 1984? Did he mean the willingness of the irresponsible Congress-led Government at the Centre to quit Jammu and Kashmir step-by-step and enable Pakistan to accomplish what it wants? Or, did he mean the realisation on the part of New Delhi that Siachen glacier is not that strategic that requires the Defence Ministry to maintain Army outposts there? That the Defence Minister welcomed the ongoing dialogue process with Pakistan and talked about meaningful and result-oriented discussions on Siachen glacier region must disturb everyone in the country. It should disturb the Indian Army all the more because it has already lost more than 1000 precious lives while defeating the Pakistani evil designs in this region. If the Defence Minister was talking in terms of "peace" with Pakistan in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister P Chidambaram was doing the same outside the Lok Sabha. He said that he was "optimistic" about the India-Pakistan Home Secretary-level talks on May 24-25 in Islamabad, where the two sides are likely to "take forward their discussions on a liberalised visa regime". "There are a number of issues the two sides will discuss and I am optimistic about the outcome," he told reporters addressing his monthly press conference. He also listed "trade matters" and other "confidence-building measures along the Line of Control between the two nations in Jammu and Kashmir as other issues that the two Home Secretaries would discuss at their meeting". It is disturbing that neither the Defence Minister nor the Home Minister said a word against Pakistan which has been bleeding India and allowing terrorists to launch anti-India operations from its soil since long. Compare what they said with what the Pakistani foreign office and military say about Jammu and Kashmir and see for yourself the difference. You will find that while our leadership is weak, meek and uninspiring, the Pakistani leadership is uncouth, blunt, assertive and unambiguous as far as its attitude towards Siachen glacier, or for that matter the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir, is concerned. It would not be an exaggeration if someone may says so that it is Pakistan and its friends who are dictating terms to India with the Indian political leadership or policy-planners willingly and cheerfully walking into the Pakistani trap, thus causing an affront to the self-respect of the nation. The manner in which the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, interfered in the internal affairs of India and spoke on behalf of the people of Kashmir; the views as were expressed by the Defence Minister inside the Lok Sabha and by the Union Home Minister outside the Lok Sabha; and the manner in which our Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister have been dealing with Pakistan must make everyone in the country to sit up and discuss ways and means calculated to defend and further promote the paramount national interests. Such an exercise has become imperative considering the fact that we have in our establishment elements who want New Delhi to quit Jammu and Kashmir in the name of peace and throw in the lot of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh and the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and other oppressed minorities in the State with the theocratic Kashmiri leadership and Pakistan. Remember, Pakistan is not only interested in Jammu and Kashmir. Its fundamental objective is to avenge the 1971 defeat at the hands of the Indian Army, destroy India and impose its pernicious ideology on the people in this region, the Indians and the Afghans included.
