JK Bank plays typical NGO | Starts SDP on knitting in Kupwara | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 2: Playing a typical non-Governmental organization (NGO), the Jammu Kashmir Bank RSETI today commenced a ten-day `skill development programme' on knitting in Kupwara. Pertinently the Valley especially the frontier district of Kupwara has been flooded with knitting and sewing machines during the past two decades by various NGOs. According to rough estimates as many as 2000 knitting and sewing machines have been `gifted' to widows and orphans till date to enable them to make an `honourable' living. The problem, however, lies not in the machines but in the number of machines that have been given. The machines, social scientists believe, have adversely affected the business of those who were already in the trade. Too many machines for a small place, according to them, have not done any good to the people. Now the Jammu Kashmir Bank has joined the race which will only add to the prevailing confusion. The training is being sponsored by DRDA Kupwara and the trainees are from three Self-help Groups belonging to Block Wavoora, Kupwara. The Jammu Kashmir Bank is fully aware of the fact that tailoring and knitting profession has received a severe set back due to massive expansion of what is popularly known as `Bangladeshi' goods. Thousands of persons sell second hand foreign clothes across Kashmir at very low rates. A shirt that is sold in a posh store at Rs 2000 is available on a wayside stall for Rs 100. Interestingly many of these traders are financed by the Jammu Kashmir Bank. |
