J&K propose to have Disaster Management Institute in Srinagar | | | Early times report SRINAGAR , May 4 : Jammu and Kashmir, which is located in Seismic Zone V, has decided to set up State Disaster Management Institute (SDMI) to face any natural or man made - disaster. This information was given by Divisional Com missioner, Kashmir, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon at the concluding function of the five-day disaster preparedness training programme organised by civil defence and Divisional Disaster Management Authority here today. Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Amir Ali in the office of Divisional Commissioner, said that school children from different schools presented skits and various prog rammes in a bid to create awareness amon gst the common masses. They also shared the necessary titbits and do's and don'ts that they had learnt during the five days training course about how to face the challenges' in the event of natural or human induced calamites. Dr Sagar while appreciating the organ isers for holding such necessary prog rammes to disseminate information about safeguarding the infrastructure and the protection of precious lives, said that state government has already formulated a comprehensive State Disaster Management Pol icy. He said in this connection a proposal has been mooted for establishing a SDMI at Bemina on the pattern of Uttar khand state where there is a separate Ministry of Disaster Management to face any natural or manmade disaster. "We are living in Seismic Zone V and we should be mentally ready to face disasters." He highlighted that the role in conducting such training prog rammes is to prepare student community and even common people for quick response to meet any eventuality. |
