State Govt must take final call on employees demands quickly | | | early times report Srinagar May 4: As the Civil Secretariat offices are scheduled to reopen here on May 7, State Government employees have announced daylong protests on May 7 and two days' strike on May 8 and May 9. The State Government is still sleeping over the demands of its 4.5 lakh employees who have been demanding enhancement in the retirement age from the present 58 to 60, regularization of adhoc and daily wagers, enhancement of remunerations for Anganwari workers etc. The State Government employees are not demanding anything that is either unjustified or which the state government cannot grant. The committee headed by Chief Secretary Madhav Lal has already submitted its recommendations to the State Government regarding the employees' demands. Chief Secretary has refuted news reports that the committee headed by him has recommended a middle path with regard to the enhancement of retirement age. The same media reports had said the committee had recommended enhancement from the existing 58 to 59 years for the state government employees. The Chief Secretary has categorically denied this report also. The report will now be taken up by the State Cabinet and after that the same will be passed on to a Cabinet Sub-Committee for the final recommendations. The patience of the State Government employees is literally being put to test in this regard and it is neither in the interest of the government nor the employees and the general public to continue any further delay in taking the final call on this crucial issue. The State Government employees have also said that the Government is now trying to back out of its commitments made to the employees on behalf of the state Chief Minister. As the Civil Secretariat and other senior offices are returning to the Valley after six months the general public is awaiting the reopening of these offices in Srinagar so that their long pending issues are decided. If the short six months period is wasted in yet another tussle between the employees and Government the worst sufferers would be the general public. Governments in democratic countries are machines those move efficiently and effectively with the complete dedication of the state government employees and the goodwill and cooperation of the people. If the Government and its employees come down to a face off, the problems would remain unresolved and the functioning of the Government would be impeded. It is in the fitness of things that without any further delay in this regard the State Government must quickly take the final call on the employees' demands and take decisions which are in the best interests of the employees and the general public. If the workman starts quarrelling with his own tools what work can he perform other than bring upon himself the name of a bad workman?
