PDP can't decide till 'probable names' officially conveyed: Mehbooba | Appointment of CVC | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, May 4: Concerned over delay in sending the panel of names for the coveted post of Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC), the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) said that by delaying the name of CVC, the National Conference led present coalition Government seem to buy time and non serious over the issue. The leader of the Opposition Mehbooba Mufti, who is one of the members of high power selection committee taking serious exception of the issue today, said that so far no official communication has been received by the leader who is one of the members of high power selection committee. With only a few days left for the formal meeting of the high level selection committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the PDP leadership is exasperated over denial of official access to the panel of names. Meantime party insiders observed that the issue of finalising the name of CVC is completely mishandled by the National Conference led coalition Government as it has not revealed the names of candidates to Mehbooba Mufti. "It has become a sort of habit for the State Coalition Government to linger on such crucial appointments… They (NC) keep the important matters close to their chest and take the opposition into confidence only at the eleventh hour…. It is quite baffling that the government has not up till now bothered to send across the panel of names," sources said adding under such circumstances how the PDP can give nod on a particular name. Sources further said that keeping in view the attitude of the present dispensation, the proposed selection committee meeting may be deferred and the appointment of CVC could again put to the back burner. Speaking to Early Times, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti maintained, "How can we decide on a particular name when the panel consisting probable candidates is yet to reach us…. Until now we have not received the panel of names." "How can we give approval or consider somebody for the post of CVC in the absence of a panel of names…. It can be decided only if we come across some official list consisting names of the probable….. We can not act or made up our mind on the final choice just on the basis of media reports and rumours," Mehbooba added. It is pertinent to mention here that the State Vigilance Commission Act was amended last year to accommodate IPS officers as well. The Act had initially limited the nominations for the post to IAS and other men of integrity. |
