Turmoil hits development in Kashmir
5/5/2012 11:34:09 PM
early times report
SRINAGAR, May 5: The Kashmir Valley has gone from bad to worse in 23 year long turmoil with development at sand still all over the Valley. Almost all roads including the Jammu -Srinagar National Highway are in dilapidated condition.
The deteriorating condition of Jammu- Srinagar National Highway leads to traffic jams on this busy road almost all the day right from Khanabal to Srinagar. The Highway has been neglected during the turmoil period as no steps were taken for its renovation because authorities apprehended terrorist attack on workmen.
A big patch of road at Khanabal crossing has deep ditches and huge dumps of muck along its side. The rotary at Khanabal crossing is also in dilapidated condition. This Chowk used to be charmful prior to militancy period. But through a cursory look on this road one gets impression that he is passing through an area which is over 50 years backward.
Same is the condition of the road up to Batingo, Awantipora, Chursoo, Letpora, Pampore, nearby pass and Batwara. Moreover with increase in traffic rush on National Highway especially replacement of passenger buses by Tata sumo almost in all areas has led to traffic hazards on Jammu -Srinagar National Highway and commuters have to face a tough time in reaching their destinations. Sometimes there are traffic jams of two to three hours duration on the Highway and people apprehend the problem will compound after the darbar move.
The internal city roads also are in dilapidated condition while no attention of renovation and widening of urban roads have taken place. Tough huge money has come from centre under PMGSY and other schemes but on the ground no development is visible with authorities at the helm of affairs are assigning terrorism as the cause.
The much talked about four laneing of National Highway has also not taken up in hand in Kashmir Valley due to terrorism and disturbed conditions. The delay in widening the National highway especially in Kashmir Valley has resulted in many hardships to people. However the common masses are also unconcerned towards the issue. The people have now used to be these conditions and for them this all is a routine affair.
The 23 year long militancy has made them so immune to the situation that they have forgotten all other things including development.
