Valley traders urge 'separatists to ensure uninterrupted 'tourist season' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 5: All those connected with tourism in Kashmir and pilgrim traffic to Vaishno Devi and Amarnath cave, especially hoteliers, traders, transporters, porters and houseboat owners, have renewed their appeal to separatists and leaders of militant outfits to ensure that the ongoing bumper tourist traffic to the state was not disrupted. Those connected with tourism have conveyed to the separatists that any step aimed at disrupting tourist season and forcing pilgrims to defer their plan of visiting the holy cave could result in collapse of economy of the state and its people. They said that since 1996 tourism and pilgrim tourism had picked up but the events that took place in the summer of 2010 had damaged the tourist season causing immense losses to traders, transporters and hoteliers. Trading and business community that besides tourist traffic to Kashmir pilgrim traffic to Amarnath and Mata Vaishno Devi has sustained state's economy and helped nearly 40 per cent of the people, and pilgrim traffic to take out an honorable living. Experts said that in case tourist traffic and pilgrim tourism showed further increase it could help unemployed educated youth to secure gainful employment by opening travel agencies transport services, business ventures and security agencies. They said whenever tourist traffic, including pilgrim rush to the state is affected by incidents of subversive violence the level of poverty and unemployment increases in the state. |
