BDSA organizes ‘jan jagran’ rally
Parmanand gives clarion call to Dalits to fight for their rights
1/28/2007 10:36:58 PM
JAMMU | JAN 28
To create awakening about the mission of ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’ Dr B R Ambedkar and to bring Dalit Samaj on one plate form, Bhartiya Dalit Sahitya Akademy (BDSA) organized a jan-jagran rally at Roop Nagar here today which was attended by over 5000 delegates from all over the State.
In his welcome address the founder President of the Akademy and former Governor Haryana, Babu Parmanand said that the mission Dr Ambedkar was to establish a democratic system based on equal rights for every citizen, a social system devoid of discrimination, exploitation and bondage and a social structure wherein the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other tribes and socially backward caste will have equal rights and equal opportunities of development.
‘Without establishing such social, economic and political order, the dream of making a free, independent and prosperous India will remain on papers, in imagination and an illusion’, Babu Parmanand remarked.
Regretting that the Dalits and other weaker sections of the society, across the country, have been given a raw deal during the last 60 years of Independence, the founder of the Akademy gave a clarion call the Dalit Samaj to get united and fight for their rights.
Referring to SRO 294 of the state government, Babu Parmanand said that it was detrimental to the interests of SCs, STs and weaker sections adding that ‘its implementation would result in their deprivation’. He said, ‘it provides backdoor entry to some non-scheduled castes’ and described it ‘as a flagrant violation of the Constitution.’ He alleged that the state government has denied due share in services to these communities and is reluctant to reserve seats for them in the State Assembly.
Quoting Dr Amdedkar ‘be thy own light and do not depend on others for your rights, rise, awake and stop not, till your rights of social justice, equity (equal share), equality and liberty are achieved’, the former Governor asked the Dalit Samaj to prepare themselves for struggle to protect and defend their constitutional rights. ‘We neither want to usurp the rights of others nor provoke the sentiments of hatred and opposition’ he said and added that ‘all should understand that grant of constitutional rights and social equality to the Dalit Samaj is the surest guarantee for fraternity and stability and those creating bottlenecks in their way are in reality harming the social fabric of India and endangering the hard won Independence, he remarked.
Dr Sat Paul, Rattan Chand, Ramesh Didwal, Ch Piara Singh, Sunil Dimple, N D Rapwal, Charan Dass were among others who addressed the rally.
On this occasion, seven resolutions were adopted calling for reforming educational system, implementation of special component plan to empower poor families of SCs, distribution of land among landless SCs/STs and conferring ownership rights, clubbing of centrally sponsored schemes, withdrawal of SRO 294 and rejection of application of Creamy Layer and grant of social equality.
