Official reports said that between 2005 and 2011 the number of foreigners having visited increased from 2.07 lakhs to 4.85 lakh.
The report that Himachal was gearing up for receiving anything between 5 lakh and six lakh international tourists during the current year. Against this, the number of foreign tohaving visited Kashmir during 2005 and 2011 ranged between 90,000 and three lakh. Hoteliers and executives in travel agencies said that failure of the Government in throwing open new tourist destinations and resorts in the Kashmir valley had forced foreign tourists to prefer Himachal to Kashmir.
They said that besides the Mughal gardens the valley has simply been showcasing Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Son amarg, Kokernag but against this foreign tourists enjoy their stay in Shimla, Kulu, Manali, Dalhousie, Dharam shala, Palampur, Kelong, Chail, Kasuali and other destinations.
Travel agencies' executives have confirmed that the valley has been registering heavy tourist traffic at the present moment They said if the tourist traffic further swelled travelers may experience lodging problems. as was witnessed in 2009.Thy said that the Government should create suitable lodge arrangements and the private sector would cooperate provided they received incentives.
These executives said that besides slashing air fare the Government should develop tourist resorts in the Jammu region too. And if it was done the state could expect a longer tourist season.
They said there was need for developing historic shrines in the state that could attract pilgrim traffic. Hitherto the State's economy rests on the pilgrim traffic to Mata Vaishno Devi and holy Amarnath cave.
