Realignment of political forces in JK inevitable | Mufti, Azad preparing for a big game plan | | Bashir Assad
Srinagar, May 6: Two influential politicians of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad have started net-practice for a final assault on National Conference with their eyes on 2014 assembly elections. All most all the political forces in the state are in agreement that count down for next assembly elections has already started and each of them is strategizing their future course of action in their own way and style. Azad has perhaps realized that the chances of Congress comeback at the Centre are quite bleak. He is, therefore, using his cards intelligently killing two birds with one stone. On one hand Azad has offered to quit from the union cabinet on the pretext to strengthen the congress party thereby winning over the confidence of Nehru family while on the other hand he would like to concentrate on Jammu and Kashmir to make a comeback. For that he has to pass on the anti-incumbency factor to National Conference which is heading the coalition government in the state. If political watchers are to be believed, Azad will be more offensive against and critical of National Conference in coming days which he has already hinted at. However, what remains to be seen is the realignment of political forces in the state about which observers are clueless as yet. On the other hand Mufti who is the most shrewd politician of the day has successfully started appealing migrant Kashmiri Pandit constituency on one hand and on the other hand his party has made its presence felt in Jammu region particularly the urban Jammu. However, both have simultaneously targeted their allies which till other day was unusual. Azad started hitting at National Conference while Mufti was critical of congress since 2008 when the present dispensation took the reigns of power in the state. If hitting at favorites is any indication, both Mufti and Azad are actually preparing ground for realignment which is quite understood as Congress will not like to go for a pre-poll alliance with National Conference for obvious reasons and PDP this time will not afford to annoy BJP at centre. However, what is interesting to note is that at the larger canvas Mufti is identifying his friends in regional political forces and the left too while as Azad is trying to woo his traditional constituency in the Jammu region by one way or the other. However, what is more important is that Azad is striving for a comeback in state politics and Mufti is taking calculated risks to enhance his friend circle in New Delhi on one hand and on the other hand he has very successfully made his presence felt in Jammu region immaterial whether this good will could be translated into vote bank or not. But the fact remains People’s Democratic Party is no more alien in Jammu region which is quite encouraging for him. Azad on the other hand has however kept the options open and very recently during a public rally at Devsar in South Kashmir he said that coalition governments are set to be the new dispensations, be it the centre or the state. Coming to the Kashmir valley governance deficit in this part of state is more perceptible and synchronicities alone can do wonders for National Conference. On the other hand smaller groups and individuals are asserting in Srinagar district to take advantage of disarrayed National Conference. Whatever the nature of dispensation one thing is for sure that now onwards Azad will give sleep less nights to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's National Conference and PDP will enjoy the two coalition partners fighting each other to depart as National Conference did when cracks widened between PDP and Congress before 2008 elections. |
