Widow seeks CM's intervention for justice | `My son's death was not accidental' | | Early Times report
udhampur, May 6: A widow has sought Chief Minister's intervention to bring the alleged killers of her son to justice. The widow has identified the `killers' in her letter addressed to the Chief Minister. Narrating her woeful tale, the widow said: "My younger son namely Karan Kumar Sharma died due to drowning. in a river at Baba Padh, Udhampur on 28-09-2010. He was doing his BBA course at Udhampur Degree College." Identifying the alleged killers as Pradip Singh Vicky Singh, Rajan Sharma and Nitin Kumar, the widow, Usha Sharma added: " On that ill-fated day of the incident my son was taken by his four friends to that river with an understanding to enjoy a picnic altogether. It has been learnt from reliable sources that two boys accompanying my son namely Rajan Sharma and Nitin Kumar belonging to Jammu whereas the other two namely Pradip Singh and Vicky Singh were from Udhampur district itself. As I learnt my son namely Karan Kumar Sharma died due to drowning whereas I know that he was not a swimmer and was usually afraid of taking bath in deep water." Usha came to know that her son was provoked by the boys accompanying him to enjoy swimming in the river with them. "He was then forced to step inside the river along with two boys of Jammu who were holding his hands. They left him alone in the middle of deep water and crossed the river to the other bank. My son cried for help. But nobody came to his rescue. My son finally died due to drowning. I believe the drowning was not accidental. His (my son's) death was caused due to provocation and negligence by the boys accompanying him." Usha makes a mention of a tipper driver who saw Pradip Singh and Vicky Singh running away from the river site. The witnesses asked them why they were running. "Two boys hailing from Jammu namely Rajan Sharma & Nitin Kumar also fled from the spot in their shorts. They had left their clothing behind", she said adding "Those Jammu boys were later spotted by nearby BSF camp personnel while they were trying to run in their under clothes only. They were questioned by the BSF personnel as to why they were running without their normal clothing. BSF personnel doubted their unconvincing reply. It was due to the timely intervention of those BSF personnel only that the local Police was informed and thereafter rescue and fishing out operation was conducted by the Police with the help of army divers next day." The body was fished out of the river after 3 days with the help of a private diver who was called from Ramban. Police called all the four boys who were accompanying the deceased, for interrogation and they found that this incident took place due to extreme provocation by his two friends given the statement to BSF personnel. "It is surprising for me to accept the fact that only two out of four boys hailing from Jammu were kept in the Police lock-up for some days whereas the other two boys hailing from Udhampur were let free soon after making preliminary enquiries only. It is pertinent to make a special mention here that the two boys hailing from Udhampur were found running from the drowning spot by the Local workers of the P.H.E Department / Labourers working with Tippers and BSF personnel whereas the other two boys hailing from Jammu run away from the spot in their under clothes", she said. . Usha questions the partiality of the police investigation. According to her, action should have been taken against all the boys. "It has come to my notice from reliable sources that those two Udhampur boys were somehow related to Balwant Singh Mankotia, local MLA hailing from Udhampur district. It seems that investigation conducted by local Police was influenced by Makotia. On the other hand one of two boys hailing from Jammu is the son of Om Parkash Sharma, Asstt Sub Inspector in the Police Department also influenced the investigating agency." Usha has sought information about the progress of investigation. She has also sought Chief Minister's intervention to bring the culprits to justice. |
