Fresh attempts of encroachment at Abhinav Gupt Cave | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 6: Fresh attempts have been made to encroach the hillock on which the famous Abhinav Gupt cave is situated. According to reports the land mafia which has started quarrying on the hillock has intensified its operations after the Kashmiri pandit community raised its concern against the illegal quarrying of the hillock for which KPs demanded immediate action. The reports said, that instead of taking action against land mafia which is hell bent to threaten this ancient heritage site has intensified its activities with authorities looking as silent spectators. It may not be out of place to mention here that the encroachment of hillock at Beerawah in Budgam district of Kashmir Valley for stone quarrying has posed a threat to age old heritage site situated on this hillock from immemorial times. Despite the hue and cry raised by the people associated with preservation of cultural and ancient monuments in Kashmir the Government has till date failed to take action against the defaulters and land mafia involved in grabbing the hilllock and indulging in illegal quarrying. This has led to public outcry and a great resentment has also been shown by the lovers of culture who are pleading for preservation of the site to save the ethos and monuments of Kashmir. Abhivnav Gupt the renowned scholar of Kashmiri Shaivism had entered this cave along with 1200 disciples over 1000 years back for meditation and he did not return after that. This great scholar who by the school of Kashmiri Shaivism is considered an incarnation of Lord Shiva had made a tremendous contribution to Kashmiri ethos and culture and added a new chapter in it with his contributions. The worldwide known scholar has no contemporary till date and it is said that the world has not produced such a towering scholar till date whose admirers are among the great scholars in foreign universities also. His Tantra Loka and Dhnaiya Loka are great contributions to the society and by reading them one can come to know of what kind of intellect this great scholar was having. His critical appreciation and commentary on Bharat Munis Natiya Shastra is also a great contribution to Indian ethos and culture. But unfortunately our Cultural Ministry has altogether failed to conduct research on this legendary of Kashmir, whose contribution is immense to Kashmir and its culture. But neither the Cultural Ministry nor Archeological Survey of India has taken required steps to preserve these monuments in Kashmir. It is not only this cave but there are other 40 Archeological sites in Kashmir which need immediate attention for their preservation. The Such Kral site in Tral tehsil of South Kashmir district of Pulwama is also in constant neglect and negligence but the concerned authorities are taking no pains to preserve them despite the repeated pleas by activists working in cultural field. This site also needs an important attention from the Government. It is unfortunate that despite creating a separate cultural Ministry no concrete steps were taken in preserving the ancient archeological sites in Kashmir. The Kutbal, Lilitpora and Kasabyar Pulwama which have been neglected need immediate attention. For this both Archeological Department of state and central Government have to gear up. It is unfortunate that the ASI which has shifted its office to Jammu in 1989 has failed to reopen the same in Valley after 23 years despite the fact that there is a discernible change in the ground situation in Kashmir now. The ASI which is functioning from Jammu should immediately shift to Kashmir Valley and start functioning from Summer Capital in case it is interested in preserving the ancient monuments and archeological sites of Valley. The Kashmir Valley having rich cultural background has 40 Archeological sites in comparison to 10 of Jammu. Besides there are 10 more such sites in Ladakh region so the ASI has no logic in operating from Jammu. The Union Government and Cultural Ministry should take a cognizance of the same and take immediate steps in shifting ASI offices to Kashmir and respect the aspirations of the people.
