| Leader of JKML, hardline Hurriyat constituent, quits party | | |

Senior separatist leader Hakeem Abdul Rashid today resigned from Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League, a constituent of hardline Hurriyat Conference, following differences with the party chief over not condemning the attack on the house of the amalgam's moderate faction Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
"I have resigned from JKML to show my resentment against party chief Masrat Alam not condemning the grenade attack on Mirwaiz's house," Hakeem said.
Unidentified militants fired a rifle grenade towards the Srinagar residence of Mirwaiz on January 15 which missed the target and exploded outside the house. The moderate faction blamed the hardline Hurriyat for the attack, a charge strongly denied by the Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led faction.
Hakeem said the situation in the state demands unity among all Hurriyat factions. "Political differences can be resolved through dialogue and opponents can be won through logic and not through pulls and pressures."
He strongly condemned the attack on the house of Mirwaiz.
Alam, when contacted, confirmed the resignation of Hakeem from the party, saying "I have received a letter from Hakeem. His resignation will not make any difference."
