Bhim's new initiative unlikely to click in Jammu Pradesh
Vikalp Morcha

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 7: Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) Bhim Singh yesterday took an initiative to bring on one platform various political leaders and activists so that a full-scale campaign is launched in Jammu Pradesh to end discrimination with its people and ensure their proper and adequate empowerment. Those who attended the meeting, held at Hotel Ashoka, Jammu, included Harsh Dev Singh, MLA and working chairman of JKNPP; Sheikh Abdul Rehman, Ex-MP and State President Samajwadi Party; Bharat Bhushan Kotwal, Advocate and Vice-Chairman of JKNPP; Yashpal Kundal, MLA and State General Secretary JKNPP; Udey Chand, Chairman Duggar Pradesh Party; Major General (Retd.) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal; Professor Hari Om; S. Daljit Singh, Vice-President JKNPP; Anita Thakur, State General Secretary JKNPP; Rajiv Chunni, President SOS; Dr. Zahoor-ud-Din; Dev Raj Baru and Anoop Singh Salathia.
After holding a threadbare discussion on the issues facing the people of Jammu Pradesh, the participants in the meeting resolved to set up Vikalp Morcha (Alternative Front) to fight against the outfits responsible for the miserable plight of the people of Jammu Pradesh, including Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. According to the press statement issued on behalf of the organizer of the meet, "there emerged a total consensus to forge a strong alternative (Vikalp Morcha) in Jammu Pradesh to ensure equity, justice and remove discrimination with Jammu and Ladakh". It is understandable. To give a concrete shape to the idea and prepare a comprehensive roadmap a coordination committee was also formed with Bhim Singh as its coordinator and Sheikh Abdul Rehman, Udey Chand, H.C. Jalmeria Advocate, Dr. Zahoor-Ud-Din and Rajiv Chunni as its members.
Bhim Singh and his JKNPP have been working for the empowerment of the people of Jammu province since almost three decades now, but without achieving any substantial success. He and his party have failed to evoke the required response in Jammu Pradesh because of the inconsistencies in the policies they have been pursuing, as also because they have never maintained pressure on the authorities. Convinced that his outfit might not succeed or achieve the stated goal (reorganization of the State), Bhim Singh took a fresh initiative yesterday. It was good and praiseworthy initiative. The people of Jammu Pradesh do need an alternative to the Congress, the BJP and the Kashmir-based parties like National Conference, as none of these formations has done anything whatever to protect and advance their genuine cause and, instead, worked against them and willfully.
However, the question to be asked is: Will the otherwise praiseworthy initiative of Bhim Singh click? The answer, unfortunately, is not inspiring. The answer cannot be yes. The reasons are obvious. One of the reasons is the association of certain persons with the new initiative who have been hobnobbing with pro-Pakistan India-based track-II actors and denouncing New Delhi saying it has not granted to the people of the State the right to self-determination. Another reason is the association of persons with the effort who have been seeking to ensure the partition of Jammu Pradesh on communal lines along Chenab river. They have been demanding segregation of the otherwise non-existent Chenab Valley from Jammu Pradesh. How else should one describe their demand seeking establishment of Chenab Valley Autonomous Hill Development Council.
The initiative can click provided such elements are prepared to stop airing controversial views in the larger interest of Jammu Pradesh and the hapless people it houses. They are also members of the coordination committee as set up yesterday. It is hoped that they would rise to the occasion and air only views which the people of this province appreciate. The people of Jammu Pradesh want to achieve two things - empowerment and integration - and they hate those who seek to erode the identity of Jammu Pradesh by identifying themselves, may be inadvertently, with those in Kashmir who are for separation from India. The fact is that if the new initiative is to click in Jammu Pradesh the protagonists of right to self-determination and Chenab Valley have to reform themselves. Not to do so would be only to ensure the collapse of the proposed Morcha even before it becomes functional.
