Bid to bring 'unit' on one platform, few functionaries stay away
Udhampur Congress meeting: warm reception to Jugal

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 7: Post his nomination to the Upper House, MLC Jugal Kishore Sharma it was a first political show in the Udhampur in which he tried to bring all functionaries on board for the larger goal of strengthening Congress in the district which has been in a state of disarray for a long time. Amidst a rousing reception arranged for the newly elected legislator, even as district unit of the ruling party assembled in large numbers putting a united face, the absence of some functionaries who raised a revolt at the time of polls for MLC in March this year, remained conspicuous.
The former minister Jugal Kishore, along with those present in today's function, however, made loud call for Congress to remain united in the district to make the party stronger as also to unnerve the opposition parties which have only been taking benefit of the Congress unit as a divided house. Consequent upon the directions from the high command , it was the first interactive meeting with functionaries, workers intended to bring all factions on one platform. The meeting assumed significance in the backdrop of the fact that Udhampur Congress unit has been functioning in factions and there were many senior functionaries at the district and block level who had opposed tooth and nail the move to nominate Jugal in the Legislative Council .
While today's meeting could be seen as Jugal starting afresh amidst the wave of disgruntlement and resentment at the district and block level, perhaps the day of reckoning for the Congress in Udhampur, in the sense the district unit of the party put up a united face after a long period of time, District president BS Pathania, Youth Congress leader RS Pathania and MLA Chenani Krishan Lal Bhagat chose to stay away from the meeting. Though the occasion was purely for the purpose of extending a reception in honour of newly elected MLC and latter's interaction with the workers and cadres, observers see it as an attempt to make beginning on positive note in which he succeeded to a great extent as it was seen that Congress leaders from Udhampur town shared the platform after decades and gathered on a single platform to convey a message of unity among the rank and file of the party. The leaders include Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Geeta Khajuria, Contested Candidate from Udhampur constituency Brij Mohan Sharma, senior Congress leader Shakeel Shah, Former Councilor Ashwani Khajuria, District Udhampur Mahila Congress chief Taro Devi. The presence of a large number of Sarpanches and Panches from different parts of the district also proved to be a positive development for the organizers of this meeting. However, there were some block level functionaries who held their already scheduled meetings separately.
