Early Times Report
Jammu, May 8 :Intensifying their agitation against the long duration power curtailment in the Jagti township the inmates of this newly constructed migrant colony today blocked Jammu -Srinagar National Highway for four hours at Nagrota and protested against the callousness of the PDD authorities towards them.
Over a two thousand strong crowd including men women and children took out a procession from the Jagti township to Nagrota and squatted on National Highway disrupting the routine traffic on it. The protestors raising slogans against the authorities of PDD and relief organization warned to intensify agitation in case the 16 hour long power curtailment was not done away with immediately. Terming the over 16 hour long power curtailment a human rights violation by the Government the protesters warned to take the issue to National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and seek its immediate intervention in the matter. Despite the hard efforts of SHO Nagrota and other local revenue officers the road blockade was not lifted by the migrants forcing the authorities to divert the traffic via Nagrota by pass. However later the road blockade was lifted after the Additional DC Jammu reached the site and assured the protestors that their demand will be solved. He assured them that there will be no power cut in the township today. On this assurance the protestors lifted the blockade but warned to resort to road blockade tomorrow in case the power supply was not restored in the township. Lambasting the PDD authorities they termed the over 16 hour power cut in the township a criminal conspiracy by the higher ups in Department and warned that the displaced Pandits who have been forced to flee from the Vally on gun point will not pay power or water tariff till they are not paid the compensation for the damages suffered by them due to loss of crops, fruit and other produce from their land and orchards in 23 year long turmoil. The protestors also alleged that their left out properties were vandalized, houses either dismantled or set ablaze but Government failed to pay any compensation to them till date. ``In most cases the residential houses of displaced Pandits from Valley have turned into rubber after they collapsed due to heavy rainfall and snowfall but no compensation or exgratia was released in our favour'' said Surinder Kumar one of the agitators. ``He said the migrants can't pay the tariff till date they are not paid the compensation for the damages suffered by them and their homeland is restored to them. The Government is spending thousands of crores of rupees to please the majority community in Valley who took to arms and forced over four lakh members of minority community to flee from the Valley. ``They are being given all concessions while we have been deprived of our rights which is intolerable in future'' he added.
