Security agencies oppose AFSPA lifting | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 8 : Despite signs of marked improvement in the security scenario senior Army functionaries continue to oppose withdrawal of AFSPA in Jammu and Kashmir.Their plea is that in the light of possibilities of increase in the level of infiltration bids and fresh regrouping among militant outfits there was need for retaining AFSPA. Senior security experts say that since attempts were being made at destabilising peace in the state it would be against the interests of the people of the state if the security forces were deprived of the legal cover they have been enjoying since 1990. Army functionaries have made known their views othe need for retaining AFSPA after Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, said that AFSPA would be withdrawn soon.Government circles said that there was no harm in experimenting with the withdrawal of AFSPA from the districts of Srinagar ,Budgam, Jammu, Kathua and Samba and if the experiment succeeded the legal cover that the security forces enjoy could be withdrawn from other areas of the state. However, security agencies do not support this experiment on the plea that once AFSPA was removed from five districts militants could sneak into these aras and carve out their hideouts. If that was done it would waste all "our energy and hardwork"that had done in sanitising these areas against militancy related activities. They referred to a number of encounters between the militants and the security forces at a number of places in the stat, particularly in the Kashmir valley in recent days, which indicated that militants continued to be active in he state. They said that in order to account for the militants who are active and operating in the state there was need for launching sustained operations against them. These agencies do not want Omar Abdullah to treat withdrawal of AFSPA as a political issue. |
