Omar's assertion reflects separatists' division | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's assertion that he is ready to face separatists in the polls is reflection of mainstream parties toward visible chinks in the separatists camps, which is slowly gravitating towards democratic polity of the India. Omar's statement today comes two day after senior separatists leader Abdul Ghani Bhat had said that United Nations Resolution on Kashmir are inapplicable now. "There is need to forge a common alliance with mainstream parties NC and PDP for finding a solution to the problem," Bhatt had said. The separatists camp has started realising the futility of their stand more so after the weakening of the Pakistan and growing political and economic importance of India. The statement of senior separatist leader is symbolic of their growing desire to come into the mainstream. The back channels have been working on these directions for quite some time and this statement reflects the maturity of the idea. The shift had infact already started. In the last Parliamentary elections People’s Conference Sajjad Lone did participate though he had lost. The winds didn't change but continued to move in that direction and became more pronounced when Engineer Rashid, a close confidant of Lone, did contest Assembly election from Langate in Kupwara district and managed to win. According to reports the MLA may get valid mandate of Lone in the next Assembly elections, and is expected to make credible political dent in the Kupwara district. Lone along with Mirwaiz Umar Farooq are being groomed and nurtured by New Delhi and anyone of them could be the next Chief Minister after doing much of the political ground work, a step in this direction was announced by Bhat himself. It's not that separatists camp doesn't know the importance and working of democratic set up. Hardline Hurriyat leader Sayed Ali Shah Geelani had been MLA of the State Assembly and is even drawing pension also. The affects of staying from mainstream politics became crystal when people across the Valley voted in huge number of 2008 Assembly elections, which were held just after the Amarnath land row. This was clear manifestation that people are more concerned about their issues of their daily lives than about sloganeering. By staying from polls, the separatists loose the credibility of the being people's voice and it's for this reason that realization is growing among separatists camp to end their exile from Indian democracy. |
