CM's latest on deferment: tourism season is on…..! | Dragging on Local Bodies Polls | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah proposes any move for the state only to be disposed off by him alone, albeit after some time under one or the pretext . There are always reasons galore to put off things on which his government first shows keenness and 'good intensions' and later comes out with excuses that may suit them politically but are unpalatable and unconvincing for masses in general and opposition in particular. The latest on delaying Local Bodies Polls by none other than the Chief Minister is the ongoing tourism season which is forcing his government to defer elections for some time, even as it was he who almost pronounced the month, everything short of schedule of dates on conducting the polls during Budget session of Assembly. Even though the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on first day of reopening of Darbar in Srinagar once again expressed his government's keenness on conducting the polls at the earliest, contending it would be held 'soon', the way he gave explanations for inability to go ahead now , is far more clear than mere hint that municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir will now be held sometime towards the end of the year. But the latest explanations which government is putting forward now are loaded with contradictions and confusions, rather than a clear convincing reason. When he announced in both Houses of legislature that polls would be held April this year, nobody doubted his intensions for these have since become due and the state is losing huge funds for development as there are no Municipal Corporations in place. However, shortly after this announcement the government came out with a statement the polls might have to be delayed as the electoral rolls were not completely prepared. The government in fact asserted this exercise would be completed in matter of 15 - 20 days. It is over a month now that government has now come out with another excuse causing delay that state is witnessing huge arrival of tourists this year and the tourism season has begun early . Instead of making things clear on this, the Chief Minister on Monday said something which only added to the confusion as to whether it wants to conduct the polls and how it would proceed on. "We are yet to take a decision on whether elections to municipal bodies, other than the corporations in Jammu and Srinagar, should be conducted or the polls should be altogether deferred," Omar said while replying a query from media. Notwithstanding this state of dilemma admitted by him, the CM said his cabinet would shortly take a final decision soon in this direction. a decision in this regard will be taken by the state Cabinet during its first or second meeting here. Whatever Chief Minister contended with regard to Local Bodies polls, the fact remains there is total confusion and lack of consensus and coordination between the alliance partners on certain aspects of these elections. Tourism sand tourist season may well be reason which government has tried to put forth but clubbing the polls with it is something unreasonable an excuse in many ways. For these polls are not general elections which remain spread for months or in many phases. The government if it intends so, can go ahead with schedule that can stretch at the most for not more than 15-20 days. This exercise will surely not require entire government machinery to focus on. |
