Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 8: Professor Abdul Ghani Bhat's recent statement has caused cracks in the Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference. The chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq did some damage control today by serving a show cause notice on him. Bhat has been directed to explain his position.
Pertinently while speaking at Sopore yesterday said UN Resolutions cannot solve the Kashmir dispute. "We must join hands with the pro-Indian politicians to find a solution to the vexed problem", he said.
Mirwaiz convened an emergency meeting at the Hurriyat headquarters today. Amid chaos, Umar said the conglomerate would not compromise on its constitution. The Hurriyat constitution stresses for a solution in accordance with UN resolutions, or, through a tripartite dialogue involving all the parties to the dispute.
"Views expressed by Professor Bhat at Sopore are his own. The Hurriyat Conference has nothing to do with it", he made it clear.
The meeting had to be called off as the participants chanted slogans against the leadership. Some of the members, according to reports, were manhandled by angry activists. The amalgam is scheduled to meet again next week to deliberate upon the issue.
Senior leader, Shabir Ahmad Shah expressed shock over the development. "We won't allow a third faction of the Hurriyat Conference", he said. A few days ago, Shabir had suggested dissolution of all individual units of the separatist amalgam to form a single unit.
The aged professor happens to be the second Hurriyat leader to receive a show cause notice. Earlier, Moulana Abbas Ansari was placed under suspension and a similar notice was served upon him. Ansari had entertained New Delhi's nominated interlocutors at his residence last year.
Bhat's statement evoked severe reaction from his own workers. A young leader, Shabir Ahmad Dar placed professor Bhat under suspension and took over reins of the Muslim Conference. The Hurriyat chairman, Umar Farooq, however, refused to recognize Shabir as head of the party. "We only know Professor Bhat", he said.
Interestingly, Shabir Dar was one of the persons released in 2005 after Hurriyat parley's with the Prime Minister. It was professor Bhat who pressed for Shabir's release.
