Corrupt continue on Boards, Councils chaired by CM | 'Skewed war against Corruption' | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, May 8: The tall claims of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to root out corruption in the State have been seldom transformed into action. Except for listing a few insignificant officials as corrupt, the Government and the committee headed by the Chief Secretary to identify and act against the corrupt has failed to deliver. Ehsan Mirza, the former treasurer of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association who has been identified as the main accused in JKCA funds embezzlement has continued to be the member of the State Waqf Board whose meeting the Chief Minister chaired the previous day as the chairman of the Board. Even as the Chief Minister approved the proposal to raise the emoluments of the imams in the meeting of the Board, he missed the opportunity to send across a message that when he raised war cries against corruption, he actually meant business. Interestingly, Mirza continued to be the member of the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council as well, whose president too is the Chief Minister himself. Mirza is not an ordinary member of the Council but also the member of its standing committee which is the apex body within the Council. By embezzling JKCA funds, Mirza not only gave a whip to the opposition PDP to crack on NC's back but brought NC patriarch Farooq Abdullah, the president of the JKCA under direct, sharp criticism of the opposition. The fact that Mirza continued to be member of the Sports Council and the Waqf Board despite being named as prime accused in the FIR registered in the case concerning JKCA funds embezzlement, has raised serious questions on Chief Minister's will and intent to actually move against the corrupt. |
