Militants may target communications lines if AFSPA revoked: Army | | | early times report Jammu, May 9: Top Army authorities have cited two factors while opposing Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah's demand for withdrawal of the AFSPA from five districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Authoritative sources said that when the issue of withdrawal of AFSPA resurfaced in New Delhi in the light of fresh communication from Omar Abdullah to the Congress led UPA Government the top Army authorities informed the Defence Minister, A.K.Antony, that even if the AFSPA was lifted partially it could expose the communications and logistics lines to Ladakh and to the forward areas on the LOC to the possible attacks by the militants. The top Army officials also informed Antony that maintaining communications and road links with Ladakh and with the forward villages on the LOC was a difficult task and once the militants got the advantage of attacking these lines it would affect transhipment of essential items and weapons to the Army deployed in the forward areas. Sources said that another factor cited by the Army authorities against lifting of the AFSPA would release the pressure on about 300 militants, who were active in the state, encouraging them to carry out incidents of subversive violence. The Defence Minister has been told in clear terms that withdrawal of AFSPA from five districts could prove counter productive when about 3000 militants were awaiting their chances for sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. Antony was informed that the demand for partial lifting of the AFSPA should not be given any cognizance so long about 42 arms training camps for militants existed across the LOC. Sources said that Omar's demand for partial withdrawal of AFSPA has received support only from the union Home Minister, P.Chidam-baram Indications are that the centre may watch the security situation for another five months before it conceded Omar's demand after Antony has assured the top Army brass that they would be coand their approval was to be sought before the legal cover to the security forces was lifted from five districts of the state. |
