Mysterious fire destroys goods worth `3 crore at Narwal mandi

JAMMU, May 9: In a major fire at Vegetable Market Narwal late last evening, items worth Rs three crore were gutted. Short circuit was believed to be cause of the fire, even as Fire tenders had reached the spot and started the operation to control the blazes.
A number of shops and sheds have been damaged in the fire that broke out around 9.30 p.m. Before, the fire tenders could reach the site and start fire control operation, the blazes engulfed more than half a dozen shops resulting into massive loss.
It is pertinent to mention here that at the sabzi mandi has been the hub of business of fruit, vegetables and other household items worth lakhs daily routine. The whole Jammu gets vegetable from this centralized place.
Source said that a spark has been reportedly fallen on the dry material due to which the fire spread in whole Mandi complex. The fire then gradually spread in the whole Mandi and engulfed huge stock of different items including onion, wood and other trade items of LoC kept in the Mandi. People of there informed concerned police stations. The police also informed the fire tenders the fire tender immediately reached the spot and start fire control operation.
"The locals were also extending their help to the Fire fighting teams to control the blazes.The fire broke out in a godown where potatoes and onions were stocked and the blazes engulfed more than half a dozen shops and sheds resulting into massive loss. It is handiwork of some anti-social elements and police are collecting clues of cause of fire" sources added.
Police source said that the property and goods worth more than Rs three crore, which include fruits and vegetables were gutted in a fire. He said that fire broke out in a shed of phase-II and soon engulfed the surrounding areas. He further said that the labourers spotted the blazes and immediately reported to Fire Department and police in this regard. After getting the information, fire fighters reached the spot and started the operation and the blaze controlled after some hours.
When contacted Superintended Police (SP) South Rajeshwar Singh said that the fruits, vegetables and other things worth approximately Rs 3 crore have been engulf and there is no casualty.
The people also helped the police for controlled on massive fire. He mentioned Police Department is not received such types of information that anti elements behind in this fire. The investigation is going on.
