Surge in protests against power cuts, breakdowns | Jammu MLAs mute, Ministers blissfully oblivious of 'plight' | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 9: With mercury soaring, the Power Development Department has increased its frequency of load shedding in Jammu and its outer areas, forcing the people to fret and fume and raise their pitch against the Government which is no where to be seen. With even normal power supply with unscheduled cuts getting affected and certain areas experiencing total darkness for varied reasons, the last two days have witnessed sudden surge in protests on roads in different localities of the winter capital. From Jagti- a township inhabited by Kashmiri Pandit families to ever affected localities like Janipura Sarwal, Rehari, Roopnagar and some pockets in old city areas, protest demonstrations have been gaining momentum , all by people themselves. Even though some activists of parties in opposition have joined masses concern in raking up the issue on roads in order to draw the attention of the Government or the concerned authorities. Janipura and its adjacent localities have been worst sufferers as power is off in the area since Tuesday evening when the supply snapped due to major fault in the transformer and supply line to all these areas. Normal life and all activities stand paralyzed as power supply was not restored till late today. Amid a hot and humid temperature of nearly 39 degrees Celsius, when it became unbearable for the people to remain indoors without electric gadgets to beat the heat, they converged on main roads and streets late in the night and blocked traffic for some time. In Jagti, KP families tried to draw the attention of the authorities by blocking National Highway for some hours in the morning on Tuesday. The point that needs mention is not about the causes of power breakdowns, increased power cuts or erratic supply in general that certainly causes discomfort and inconvenience to people in this heat. One can also not expect a smooth and normal supply in the wake of increased consumption in summer months with more and more people adopting modern electric gadgetry to beat the heat . How the huge gap between demand and supply scenario has to be filled in the wake of the fact that scorching hot days are to come, is something to be urgently addressed by the PDD authorities and Power Ministry led by Chief Minister himself. One only wonders and is surprised to see the casual and care free attitude of almost all Jammu based politicians, MLAs of any party, not to speak of Ministers who are at present cozying themselves in the pleasant weather of summer capital. With many areas facing intensified spree of power cuts, the MLAs , apparently not feeling the pinch of heat and suffocating atmosphere without electricity, are mute and silent as always. They only use their 'lung power' when the Government machinery is here or Assembly session is on, just to play to the gallery to appease their voters in constituencies. When there is no Government, no session of the legislature why waste time and energy …… is perhaps the line they adhere to almost in synergy. |
