'Freedom struggle' in Kashmir in complete disarray | Tackling Separatists | | Rustam jammu, May10: The so-called freedom struggle in Kashmir is in complete disarray and the so-called freedom fighters in the Valley are doing all that they could to blacken each other's face beyond recognition. Pro-Pakistan and religious bigot Syed Ali Shah Geelani is going his own way and saying day in and day out that he cannot work with All-Party Hurriyat Conference - Mirwaiz (APHC-M) because there are serious ideological differences between him and the APHC-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and the group the latter leads. Geelani also has no love lost for the JKLF leaders, including Yasin Malik, because they want independence both from India and Pakistan and this is not acceptable to Geelani and the group of fanatics that he leads. Interestingly, the Jamat-i-Islami, a religio-political outfit in Kashmir, has shunted out Geelani for all practical purposes. The APHC-M itself is on the verge of another split. The APHC-M chairman, who has gone totally confused or who has been putting forth various solutions, has lost control over the organization which consists of self-seekers, rank opportunists, rabble-rousers and blackmailers. Most of the leaders of this faction are fighting with each other. The situation has climaxed to the point that the likes of Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Khan have been openly taking on senior Hurriyat leaders like Abdul Ghani Bhat who has been for quite sometime now exposing the weaknesses of the ongoing secessionist movement, telling everyone that leaders like Abdul Gani Lone and Mirwaiz's father were killed by the Kashmiris themselves and not by the Army or paramilitary forces, dismissing the UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir as irrelevant and suggesting the APHC -M and parties like the NC and the PDP would draw up a common minimum programme and work together. Bhat's detractors in the separatist amalgam are accusing him of going beyond the confines of the Hurriyat’s constitution which says that the solution to the Kashmir issue has to be based on the UN resolutions. So much so that Hurriyat leaders like Bilal Lone are being dubbed by his own colleagues as Delhi agents and the vice-versa. The fact of the matter is that almost all the separatist leaders in Kashmir have lost their sheen and appeal. The common people, who want to lead a peaceful life and have nothing to do with the separatist movement, are using all kinds of epithets and invectives against them. They are rejecting the calls for bandh given by extremists like Geelani and others of his ilk. If the "freedom struggle" in Kashmir is in complete disarray, the story of purely religious groups is no different. A bitter struggle is going on between various schools of Muslim thought. The Wahabis are up in arms against Ahl-i-Hadith and the vice-versa. The relations between the Sunni and Shiite Muslims in Kashmir are also far from normal. Anything can happen anytime. The situation has worsened, particularly since the first week of April this year in the wake of the reign of senseless brutalities unleashed by the Sunnis against the Shiites in Gilgit-Baltistan region. One religious leader has even suggested that Ahmedias in Kashmir should be declared as non-Muslims like Pakistan did years ago. The relations between the Kashmiri-speaking Sunnis and the Gujjar and Bakerwal Sunni Muslims are also not friendly. In fact, Geelani had not so-long-ago termed the Gujjar Muslims as non-Muslims. It's no wonder then that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is taunting the separatist leaders and asking them to test their popularity by taking part in electoral exercise. The truth, in short, is that there are hardly any social groups in the Kashmir valley who have any respect for the separatists like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. It is a different story that New Delhi has failed in tackling them and bringing them to justice. When will the authorities in New Delhi rise to the occasion and tackle Kashmiri separatists who can be tackled without any difficulty whatsoever? New Delhi needs to call the separatists' bluff and establish its authority in the Valley. Besides, New Delhi also needs to take on the parties like the NC which are directly and indirectly muddying the Indian waters in the Kashmir valley for protecting and advancing their vested interests. |
