SVC appointments 'run into rough weather' | Next Selection Panel meeting unlikely following PDP's reservations | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 10: NC led coalition Government and the principle opposition party of State PDP once again appear to be on warpath, this time over the crucial issue of making appointment of Chief Vigilance Commissioner and the two members for the Commission, an over due step which is delaying in setting the anti graft body in functional mode. The tussle has started over what PDP feels its president Mehbooba Mufti not having been taken into confidence while preparing the list of probable candidates which Government has finalized. Sources said PDP president who is member of the empowered appointing panel is also angry over Government 'deliberately' not communicating meaningfully over the matter nor letting her know the names of the contenders whose names have since been shortlisted by both the allies NC as well as Congress . Mehbooba has expressed her reservations over what she feels opposition being taken for a ride over such crucial matters notwithstanding the fact Vigilance Act clearly provides for consent and approval of the leader of opposition in making appointments for this prestigious body, a provision which exists in the Act , which is why the four member panel led by Chief Minister has leader of opposition as one member. Sources said after deferment of the meeting of this panel today, even as the Government intends to convene the meeting by the end of this month or earlier, subject to availability of key members, it is unlikely to happen as PDP chief may not agree to attend the meeting or be a part of its deliberations until she is properly informed and communicated about the shortlisted panel of names . Mehbooba, sources said is particularly contesting and questioning this in the wake of the fact that certain names have already been circulated or 'leaked' to media and Government doesn't care a bit to let her know ahead of deliberations in the meeting. Sources said as PDP has raised this issue as a matter of right and prestige, it is quite unlikely that any meeting would take place soon nor is any chance of PDP agreeing to the names Government has already shortlisted for discussion and consideration for the appointments. The Government had convened the meeting of the selection committee for nominating Chief Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners for the constitution of State Vigilance Commission today but it was later postponed as leader of opposition could not make herself available. Sources said even though her absence is being attributed to her pre-scheduled engagements, but actually it is the reservation PDP chief has expressed in not letting her know the shortlisted panel of names for the post of Commissioner or two members. |
