jammu, May10: Twenty one years since the only Director of Physical Education of the University of Jammu retired, the university has not been able to find a head for the department even as the department grew from the department of sports alone to department of Sports and Physical Education that runs Bachelor and Master courses in Physical Education, a technical vocational discipline that boasts of 100 percent placement of its pass outs.
The headship of this technical department has been entrusted to several officers and teachers of the university from time to time, many of whom did justice to the responsibility, but the inability of the university administration to appoint a permanent director to the post speaks volumes of its indifference towards sports.
Further, by appointing an officer who lacks vision, pragmatism, expertise and even basic decency, the university has put its sports to complete jeopardy. Prof. Dhian Singh Bhau, a professor in Economics in the department of Distance Education who has been occupying the chair of the Director of Physical Education for over three years now is not only a green horn to the field of sports, he is an anarchist who has done everything possible to discourage and demolish sports culture in the university. "In three years, he has done nothing for the sportsmen who have scores of issues including poor infrastructure, meager DA, poor kitting and lack of coaches in the department" said an employee of the university. "He has used this office to improve his personal public relations within and outside the university and has a blank result sheet in three years" he added.
His elevation as a Professor itself has come under scanner as an RTI query seeking his eligibility in terms of his publications, international seminars, Research Works etc. are pending and the information seeker has already filed two reminders to the PIO of the university in this regard.
"It is strange that he has flouted all norms by appointing two of his relatives in the department as contractual faculty even as university had already appointed two lecturers in the department. "He adjusted Sanjeev Jamwal, and Ms. Brij Jamwal, both his close relatives as contractual faculty who are being paid from the local fund of the department" disclosed another employee of the department. "In order to legitimize their appointment, he dropped the permanent employees of the department from the faculty even as they were much more experienced and better qualified" he added.
Insiders divulge that the Vice Chancellor's secretariat has received many representations against the director Physical Education from within and outside the university. The new Vice Chancellor, Prof MP Singh Ishar who exhibited his keen interest in sports on several occasions is yet to take a call in this matter. |
