Absence of drugs policy could jeopardize welfare of patients: IMA | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 11: J&K Chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) today said that the inefficient drugs pricing policies could jeopardize the welfare of patients as well as pharmaceutical companies. Expressing concerns over the pharmaceutical and drug sector, J&K State president Indian Medical Association, Dr GM Malik today stated that the inefficient drugs pricing policies could jeopardize the welfare of patients as well as pharmaceutical companies. According to Dr Malik, "The drawback of the cost based pricing formula of the medicines aries from the fact it is non transparent, cumbersome and can hamper innovation and introduction of new drugs." He said, "Another shortcoming of cost based pricing is that it may rekindle fears of 'Licence Raj' among pharmaceutical manufactures and encourages them to unethically inflate prices of medicine. It may discourage some SMEs to undertake work related to essential drugs and dampen against the overall goal of making essential medicines affordable to all. In the case of life saving imported drugs given the varied cost structures such a price structure may only end up making innovative imported durgs unavailable in the India market and this could hamper the lives and well being of patients who are wholly dependent on these medicines," said Dr Malik. |
