Erratic Power supply: Patience of Jammu ending
5/12/2012 12:01:22 AM
Early Times Report
jammu, May 11: The people of Jammu province, both inhabiting urban and rural areas, are seething with anger. The reason is that they - apart from their several other complaints, including political discrimination with them, - are not getting power supply despite the fact that it is the people of Jammu province who have been paying more tariff as compared to their counterparts in Kashmir, which is getting power supply almost round-the-clock both in winter as well as summer months. Erratic power supply, unscheduled cuts and low voltage have adversely impacted everyone, including student community, housewives, business community and those who have set up small industries in the region. The position has turned so bad that even the localities that have been metered are not getting power supply, sometimes for hours and hours together. The people are protesting but there appears none who is prepared to listen to them and redress their grievance.
It needs to be noted that it is the people of Jammu province who are regularly paying tariff, as compared to Kashmir where the administration treats the consumers with "kid gloves" and refuses to act in the fashion they act in Jammu under the guise of ongoing secessionist violence in the Valley.
That Jammu pays more could be seen from the fact that the Power Development Department (PDD) had last year reportedly set the target of collecting Rs 814 crores for the Jammu province as compared to Rs 562 crores for the Valley. Earlier, the PDD had set the target of realizing Rs 610 crores from Kashmir valley. It could also be seen from the fact that the State Government had during 2009-2010 set the target of realizing tariff to the tune of Rs 1290 crores - Jammu Rs 774 crores and Kashmir 516 crores. During 2008-2009, the position was altogether different. The PDD was, according to a report, to realize Rs 620 crore from Kashmir and Rs 480 from Jammu province. During 2007-2008, according to the same report, the target was Rs 450 crores from Jammu and Rs 520 crores from Kashmir.
Only the State Government knows why it reversed the policy and decided to realize more from Jammu overlooking the fact that Jammu consumes less power. Jammu doesn't get power during the winter months and it also doesn't get power supply during the summer months. It is important to note that while the PDD collects electric tariff from Jammu province to the tune of 90 per cent from Jammu province every year, it doesn't collect more than 50 per cent tariff from Kashmir. Equally important is the fact that Kashmir gets 55 per cent share from the northern grid. Sources reveal that "Kashmir also consumes bulk of the Jammu's share."
The authorities need to pay attention towards Jammu so that the people get power supply round-the-clock. Besides, they must undertake measures calculated to ensure power supply only to those who pay.
