Omar shocks Family Planning officials | | | Early Times Report srinagar, May 11: The Family Planning officials must have missed a beat today when a generous Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah sanctioned Rs 5 lakhs to a woman who gave birth to quintuplets at Lal Ded Hospital, here yesterday. The Chief Minister also directed Minister of State for Health, Javaid Ahmed Dar to visit Lal Ded Hospital and enquire about the health of mother and the babies. There is nothing wrong in enquiring about the health of the mother and the babies but the `reward' has sent wrong signals to various quarters. The Government has been spending huge amounts of money to make the family planning programme a success. At one point of time, the Government even considered cash reward for the parents who keep a single child. The Chief Minister's generosity, therefore, does not fit well with the scheme of things in the Family Planning programme. Significantly, the Chief Minister did not sanction for the 2 lakh orphans that live in the Kashmir valley. A report by Save the Children gave the number early this week. The report said 37% of them were orphaned due to conflict. It is worth mentioning here that a woman namely Afroza of Larkipora, Budgam gave birth to quintuplets at Lal Ded Hospital yesterday morning. The amount will be placed in fixed deposit @ Rs. one lakh each for the five babies. |
