Love them or hate them; nobody can ignore them | Now Sher-e-Jammu calls for Congress boycott | | Early Times Report jammu, May 11: Love them or hate them; nobody can ignore them. This old maxim suits the Congress party particularly in Jammu Kashmir. The congress party has been ridiculed, condemned and adored by key political players of the State. In early 70s Sher-e-Kashmir called for social boycott of Congress workers. The boycott was strictly enforced across the Valley. It pushed the Congress workers to the wall. Even the commoner stayed away from the funeral of the Congress workers. He (Sher-e-Kashmir) even called them `worms of the gutter'. However, a few years later, the equation changed and Sher-e-Kashmir assumed power with their support. But the clandestine love affair lasted just two years. Congress run Government ousted Dr Farooq Abdullah in 1984 but once again the equation changed. In 1986 he (Dr Farooq) forged an alliance with Late Rajiv Gandhi. The duo celebrated their re-union by travelling on the Srinagar-Jammu highway that had been badly damaged by snow. And now the third generation Abdullah is ruling the State with their support. Although the relationship is not that rosy now but the coalition partners stay together for power. Someone has rightly said, "Politics makes strange bed fellows". Now, Sher-e-Jammu (Professor Bhim Singh) has also started hating the Congress. He too has called for their social boycott. He wants the Congress MLAs to withdraw support to ‘corrupt, criminal and anti-national’ Government led by Omar Abdullah. Interestingly Congress hated Sher-e-Kashmir for nurturing `separatist' tendencies. And, Bhim Singh hates them for their support to Omar Abdullah, who, according to him has been reviving anti-national elements in the State which were buried by Indira-Sheikh Accord in 1975. Whatever the reasons, the Congress party continues to play an important role in State's politics. Can anybody deny it? |
