jammu, May 11: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths today conducted surprise raids at the residence of a defence official in Lakadmandi area of Janipur, here for his alleged involvement in sprawling 200 acres defence land scam in Humhama Srinagar.
The defence scam came into limelight when Jammu and Kashmir unit of BJP raised the issue demanding a CBI probe into the alleged Rs 1,000 Crore Defence Land Scam in Srinagar. The BJP had alleged that the ruling National Conference leaders were shielding land mafia that had encroached/grabbed over 200 acres of Air Force property in high security zone i.e. near airport Srinagar. A specially constituted committee in the name and title of J&K Scam Committee working under senior BJP leader and MP Kirit Somiya probed the matter and had released 36-page booklet on the alleged scam and has submitted the copy of same to the Union Defence Minister AK Antony.
In response to the case raised up by BJP's Scam Committee, the Union Government ordered a CBI inquiry into the alleged land scam involving IAF land in Srinagar after a prima-facie probe found around 70 no-objection certificates (NoCs) were issued to private realtors by Defence Estates Officers during the last four years. In a written reply on Nov 24 last year, the Union Defence Minister, AK Antony in Rajya Sabha had stated that on receipt of complaint, a preliminary inquiry was conducted.
It was found that prima facie there were irregularities in the issue of NoCs that may have wider implications and thus to get the matter thoroughly investigated and fix responsibility, the Government has entrusted the inquiry to CBI.
Meanwhile, highly placed sources within CBI informed that a six member CBI team from Delhi arrived in Jammu from where they took escort from CBI office Jammu and conducted a raid at the residence of Defence Estate official identified as Vijay Kumar son of Dina Nath a resident of Udhampur district at present Lakermandi, Janipur and seized some of the documents from there for scrutiny, the sources said. The Estate Defence Officer who is at present posted in Rajouri had allegedly issued No Objection Certificate (NoC) to the builders for purchasing and constructing buildings on Defence land when he was EDO Srinagar. The EDO was also summoned by CBI team to his residence for questioning.
Sources further said that the bank accounts of Vijay Kumar at State Bank of India (SBI) Rehari and Jammu Kashmir Bank branch Rehari were searched by the CBI team and took the account books and balance sheet of him. The Branch Managers of the respective banks were also questioned by the CBI team. After seizing all defence and property of EDO related documents, the CBI team left to Delhi in the late hours, sources confirmed adding the scrutiny process will take place in Delhi at CBI office for further dig out.
Meanwhile, sources further added that simultaneous raids were also conducted at residences of defence officials at Srinagar and Patna.
