Security tightened as tourist influx picks up | | | Early Times REport Jammu, May 12 : Following bumper tourist traffic to Kashmir and heavy rush of pilgrims to Mata Vaishnov Devi shrine the Government has directed the police and other security agencies to upgrade security bandobast on the 300 KM long Jammu-Srinagar highway, besides famous tourist resorts in the valley ,and on the Trikuta hills right from Katra to the Bhawan. Official sources said that the occupancy rate in hotels, guest houses and houseboats in Kashmir has touched 80 to 90 per cent and in Srinagar city a large number of tourists have been forced to stay in small private houses and Gandolas (Doongas) on the Dal and Nageen lakes because of full occupancy in hotels and houseboats. Official sources said that between 2,000 and 3,000 tourists arrive in Srinagar daily and the Government besides the tour operators expect the valley to beat all the post militancy records as more than 10 lakh visitors are likely to visit Kashmir by the end of November. Sources said that during the last two months over 20 lakh pilgrims visited the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. According to these sources, various intelligence agencies have been asked to coordinate their efforts so that the security agencies received inputs on some mischief in advance facilitating time action to prevent any damage. Hoteliers, tour operators, transporters and those connected with tourism have urged the Railway Ministry to add three more trains to Jammu and Udhampur or the benefit of tourists and pilgrims. In addition to this they have appealed to the centre to intervene so that air fare to Srinagar and Jammu was reduced. Hoteliers and those connected with tourism have informed the Government that exorbitant air fare to Srinagar and Jammu has forced tourists to travel to Himachal and other tourist resorts in the country and even in Dubai and Singapore. |
