Seminar on Role of Media Organized

udhampur, May 12 : A one-day seminar on "Media in Contemporary Society: Role and Responsibility" was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Govt. Degree College (Boys) Udhampur in the College Conference Hall, here today. Former Minister and MLA Ramnagar, Harshdev Singh was the chiefguest on this occasion. In his inaugural speech he congratulated the College for holding innovative programs on wide range of themes relevant to the students and society. Highlighting the role & responsibility of media, he said that media has got a bigger responsibility as far as the working of the government is concerned.
"Media can ensure that the disparity between promise and performance of the govt. in the implementation of various schemes is minimized. Media needs to be unbiased and non-inclined to any political party," he added. MLA Samba, Yash-pal Kundal, MLA Udh-ampur, Balwant Singh Man-kotia and former MLA Chen-ani, Faquir Chand were the special guests on the occasion. Joint Director Information, Jammu, Soujanya Sharma who chaired the technical session of the seminar, delivered special lecture on the topic.
He highlighted that media being the third eye plays a constructive role in the healthy dissemination of information to the society. Mushroom growth in the number of daily newspapers cannot ensures quality reporting, it is rather the mature journalism that creates the society. "Journalism is not a profession rather it is a devotion," he added. The expert speakers drawn from various media agencies touched upon various facets of the theme. The speakers who delivered their expert lectures during the seminar include Assistant Director, News Doordarshan Jammu, Sanjeet Khajuria, Senior Journalist representing JK Channel, Harbans Nagoke, Bureau Chief Dainik Jagran Udhampur unit, S.K Singh , and Deepak Anand from Punjab Kesri. Speaking on the occasion, Sanjeet Khajuria said that rural issues need more attention of the media. "News should be given for the sake of news. Media is a mission but in the contemporary world media has ironically become an industry.
Serious rather than sensational journalism was being preferred more", he added. Bureau Chief Dainik Jagran, S. K Singh stressed on the introduction of political and developmental journalism in the state as it has entered a new phase of development after being afflicted with militancy for decades. "Regional journalism is very strong in J&K as compared to other parts of the country," he added. Deepak Anand spoke on the misconceptions myth about Media and added that corruption in media has made us conscious of media ethics.
