Kissan Union demands relief package for farmers | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 13: All Jammu and Kashmir Kissan Union today urged for Rs 500 crore relief package for drought hit 7 lakh families of farmers and separate budget for agriculture on the pattern of Railway budget for making this sector remunerative for the farmers. Addressing a dharna organized by the All J&K Kissan Union to press for the acceptance of the most genuine demands of the farmers, the Chairman of the Union, Ashok Sharma also pleaded for formulating a comprehensive farm policy for the State, so that the losses caused to standing crops, orchards and live stock due to drought, excessive rains, floods, hail storm and various diseases could be offset by providing them full compensation for such loss. He stressed that for the purpose, all the crop and cattle be insured on government expenses. Referring to long dry spell that prevailed in Jammu province last month and no timely release of water in irrigation canals followed by untimely rains, winds and hail storm, the senior Congress leader and former legislator demanded a special package of Rs 500 crore to compensate the farmers whose Rabi crops got damaged due to these factors. Besides providing six months free ration, all the affected farmers in Jammu region be given free seeds, fertilizers and other agriculture inputs for the Kharief 2012, he emphasized. All J&K Kissan Union, Vice Chairman M.S. Jamwal, General Secretaries Yash Paul Sharma and Dr Y P Sharma, and Secretary Istkar Ali Advocate while addressing the farmers impressed upon the union and state governments to concede the demands of AJJKU forthwith. They pleaded for crop and cattle insurance on government expenses. The Kissan leaders urged the farmers of India to unite themselves on single plate form to fight against their exploitation. |
