Mothers' day special

Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 13: Last year's mother day was no special for her. It was like any other day. She would wake up early in the morning to reach the Kellar (Pulwama) market well in time to make a living through begging. Early Times filed a story on her on May 9 last year. The story titled `On Mothers' Day, a `half widow' begs for a living' made the difference. An NGO (Action Aid International) provided her the much needed livelihood support. The begging has stopped and Hasina(name changed) makes an honourable living today. Hasina has been given a high breed cow. The beautiful animal keeps herbusy and also runs her house and hearth.
In 2000 her husband Nazir Hussain was abducted by militants of Hizbul Mujahideen identified as Shabir Kohli and Qasim Kohli. He never returned. The militants did not harm Husain for two months. Somehow Hasina kept herself informed of her husband's welfare. His (Nazir's) association with the militants sent wrong signals to the security agencies. They thought he had joined the militant outfit. His house was raided several times. The inmates were harassed and even thrashed.
After two months Hasina despite her untiring efforts could not get the much needed information about her husband. The un-ending search started but all in vain. The aggrieved family went to Poonch and Rajouri to ascertain Nazir's whereabouts but returned disappointed.
On day the militants, who had abducted Nazir met Hasina's father-in-law. "Why are you wasting your money? Hum nay Nazir ko gaib kar diya hai (we have subjected him to disappearance). Abandon your search or we kill all of you", they threatened. The ill-fated family had to abandon the search.
A few days later Hasina was thrown out of the house. On interventionof some elderly people, Hasina was given a room where she now lives with her four children.
