| Police to review security of Hurriyat leaders | | |
NEW DELHI
In view of threats from some militant groups, Jammu and Kashmir Police have reviewed the security of all the moderate Hurriyat leaders, including its Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq.
While the security cover for the Mirwaiz, Abdul Gani Bhat and Bilal Lone was found sufficient, the state government has decided to increase the cover for Shahid-ul-Islam, close aide of the Mirwaiz and other prominent leaders of the amalgam, official sources said here.
They said prominent Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Qureshi was also offered an increased security cover, which he turned down.
The security agencies also conveyed their apprehension to former Hurriyat Chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari, who stays in downtown Srinagar, but he refused to shift to a safer place, they said, adding some additional policemen were positioned at his house.
Islam, who had been projecting the statements of the Mirwaiz, has been put on the list of those leaders whose security needed to be upgraded. Himself a self-styled commander of Hizbullah militant outfit prior to his surrender, Islam has been working with the Mirwaiz after his release from jail.
The review of the security of the leaders was carried out after a spate of threatening calls from various militant outfits warning of dire consequences if the moderate Hurriyat leaders continued with the statements against militant groups during their stay in Pakistan.
