VC unhappy over poor participation in campus sports | JU organizes Campus Sports Day | | early times report JAMMU, May 14: After his first experience in valedictory function of the inter-college competitions, today was the second time that Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu (JU), Prof MPS Ishar has expressed his unhappiness over lack of participation by the students, teachers and officers of JU in an exclusive Campus Sports meet. In his presidential address on the occasion of Campus Sports Day of JU, which marked the valedictory of Annual Campus Sports Meet, Vice Chancellor wish there will be more participation next year. Recalling his days as organizing secretary of the Campus Sports Meet of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, he said, "We stand nowhere when compared with participation of students, teachers and officers of the GNDU in campus sports. The concept behind campus sports is to mobilize everyone, especially those who have not got a chance to play at the state and national level. But, surprisingly, the story is entirely different here in JU." However, he hinted at a new concept to improve the participation next year. "I wish to organize campus sports meet on a large scale. We should evolve some new means to make such events an attraction for both students and teachers. In GNDU there is a system by which every participating department has something at stake, the reason being there exists a point system to award overall championship trophies," mentioned the VC. In the three events held for the teachers and officers on the concluding day today, Prof Yash Pal Sharma won the 100 meters race. Rakesh Singh and Akash Bhola (AEE) remained second and third respectively. In all, only four participants were there in men's 100 meters race while no women turned up despite repeated calls. However, the first place in musical chair event, exclusively for women, was shared by Mridhula Bhagat of Department of Biotechnology and Braj Jamwal of Physical Education. In tug of war, teachers emerged victorious after they pulled the unprepared side of students to win the competition. Earlier, Vice Chancellor felicitated those who have represented JU in inter-university and other national competitions and winners and runners-up of Campus Sports Meet. However, out of those 18 students honoured, 14 belong to Physical Education Department. The List: Amit Sharma (handball), Monika (athletics), Digvijay Singh (football), Taranpal Singh (football), Stanzin Numsas (volleyball), Jatinder Paul (volleyball), Pankaj Kumar (basketball), Zaffar Iqbal (volleyball), Amandeep Singh (wrestling), Arun Kumar (football), Sahil Sharma (wresting), Rakesh Verma (softball), Varinder Singh (softball) and Mukesh Sharma (softball), all Department of Physical Education. Four others were Amit Baloria (cricket), Department of Law, Chander Dev Manhas (badminton), Yashu Vardhan Singh (cricket) and Sahil Sharma (cricket), all students of Law School. Teams and individuals of JU who excelled in the inter-college competitions were also presented mementos. It was followed by prize distribution of recently held Campus Sports Meet for students, teachers and officers. To make it a colourful function, Campus Sports Committee invited cultural troupes from affiliated Bachelor of Education Colleges to present cultural programme. Earlier, Director Sports and Physical Education, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, who happens to be chairman of the Campus Sports Committee, welcomed the distinguished gathering. Among those special guests were Director DYSS, JP Singh, Inspector General of Police, Dilbagh Singh. |
