early times report
KATHUA, May 14: There has been inordinate delay in the construction of "Travellers' Mart" at Kardoh near Lakhanpur here as about 213 kanals of land, earmarked for the purpose, continues to be under the illegal occupation of people.
Though local MLAs have a number of times asked the administration to evict the illegal occupants from the land, any action was yet awaited, according to official sources. A State Cabinet Minister had asked the district administration not to make use of force to remove them, the sources informed. 213 kanals of land was transferred by the government to Tourism Department for the construction of the mart near toll plaza. Of this land, 98.2 kanals belonged to Irrigation Department, 69.15 to the state and 45.3 kanals to private persons, sources said. The compensation to private persons had already been paid, the sources added. Sources said a few days back, an initiative was taken by the district administration to assist the Tourism Department to evict the illegal occupants so that the mart could be constructed there but a district higher authority was telephonically directed by a minister not to proceed further with their plan. Sources said in the August 2011 district development board meeting also, the participants had asserted that the land had been acquired by the Tourism Department legally and therefore, no one could be allowed to occupy it unauthorisedly. The local MLAs, who spoke Early Times, asked the administration to take immediate steps to evict the people and construct the mart.
