One-day workshop on "Child rights, child issues" for police personnel held | | | early times report JAMMU, May 14: The Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL), University of Jammu organised a one day workshop on "Child Rights and Child Issues" in collaboration with Childline India Foundation, Jammu for sensitising the police personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police on issues related to the children, here today. Over 30 police personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir police took a day out from their schedule to participate. Resource persons drawn from the law, social work and media held the interest of the J&K personnel as they discussed threadbare the issues regarding children including trafficking, beggary, prostitution, child labour, crime etc in the workshop. Dr. Poonam Dhawan, Nodal Director, Childline Jammu who is also the director of Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu, Dr. Kavita Suri, Nodal Officer, Childline Jammu and assistant director, DLL, University of Jammu, Dr. Savita Nayar, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Law, University of Jammu and Nitish Arora, programme officer, Radio Kashmir Jammu were the resource persons of the workshop which was attended by several police officials, including inspectors, sub-inspectors, investigating officers, chowki officers etc from Jammu district. The aim of the workshop was also to create awareness amongst the allied systems, such as the police, healthcare system, judicial system, juvenile justice system, labour department, on coordinated efforts and action for child protection. The police force is a very important part of the allied system for child protection. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dhawan stressed upon the attitudinal change required for the cause of children and the missionary approach required to deal with the children's issues. She urged upon the police personnel to extend their helping hand in eradicating child abuses from the society as police is always watchful of the society. Interacting on the theme "Juvenile Justice Act in Jammu and Kashmir and children issues," Dr Savita Nayar discussed in detail about the provisions of the Act and Rules. She said that clear understanding is imperative to handling juvenile delinquents with sensitivity and stressed on the need for the police and child welfare committees to be fully aware about Childline, India's first 24-hour, toll free, emergency phone outreach service for children in need of care and protection. Nitish Arora also focussed on the fact that police and media can work wonders for child protection. In the question-answer session, the participants also asked several questions from the resource persons. Among other present at the occasion included Dr. Sandeep Singh and Dr. Bharti Prabhkhar, both Project officers, DLL, Rewa Khajuria Vivek Sharma etc. The vote of thanks was proposed by Rohit Khajuria, City Coordinator, Childline Jammu. |
