What is Professor Bhat up to?
‘He gets hyper in May’

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 14: May marks the end of spring in Kashmir. By and large it remains pleasant. However, the former Hurriyat chairman Professor Abdul Ghani Bhat gets hyper in May.
On May 24 last year, he suggested division of Jammu Kashmir. And, last week (May 7), while addressing the people at Sopore, he said UN resolutions could not solve the Jammu Kashmir Problem. He suggested an alliance with pro-Indian groups especially with the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Last year on May 24, Bhat in an interview with a local news agency said: "People of Jammu and Ladakh do not support Kashmiris. So parts of Jammu and Ladakh be given to India and Pakistan administered Kashmir and Northern areas to Pakistan. The Valley can be made into a free economic zone and developed as Switzerland of India and Pakistan."
Bhat said Sir Owen Dixon in his plan had suggested division of Jammu Kashmir. "The RSS also suggested trifurcation of Jammu Kashmir some time ago", he said.
Interestingly people close to Bhat have been opposing division of the State. The JKLF chairman, Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have vowed to fight any attempt aimed at division of State `tooth and nail'.
Professor Bhat's interview merits an in-depth analysis. When he says some parts of Jammu and Ladakh be given to India, he conveys he is aware of the demography of the State. Bhat, therefore, suggests a division on communal lines. Can the State of Jammu Kashmir afford it? And, can the sub-continent afford it?
Bhat's interview did not fit anywhere in the scheme of things in the separatist amalgam of which he happens to be an important member. His Sopore statement also evoked severe reaction from the members of his mown Hurriyat. Mirwaiz convened an emergency meeting at the Hurriyat headquarters. Amid chaos, Umar said the conglomerate would not compromise on its constitution. The Hurriyat constitution stresses for a solution in accordance with UN resolutions, or, through a tripartite dialogue involving all the parties to the dispute.
"Views expressed by Professor Bhat at Sopore are his own. The Hurriyat Conference has nothing to do with it", he made clear.
Interestingly both the `controversial' statements were issued in May. What is Bhat up to by the way? Why does he issue `hot' statements in May?
