Police beats cricketers, resorts to aerial firing in KU campus | | | Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, May 14: In Maharaja's rule people would play kabadi and gulli danda and the rulers would appreciate the spirit of the game, however, playing cricket in a tolerant democratic system has become a sin and one who commits this sin in Kashmir university campus is beaten to pulp especially when he chases a ball. This is what was witnessed today in Kashmir University Campus when a policemen resorted to aerial firing followed by severe cane charging by his colleagues on cricketers playing in a match of Kashmir Premier League (KPL). Policemen deployed for Vice Chancellor Talat Aziz's security opened fire and abused cricketers after a ball landed in the VC lodge. The players said a ball went into the Talat Aziz's lodge during a KPL match. "When a cricketer went to fetch the ball, a policeman deployed for the VC's security upbraided him for trespassing into restricted area. They also abused him. The player stated something in response and then returned to the ground," said Majid, captain of Kashmir Greats. Majid said they resumed the match, but after an hour nearly 12 policemen came to the ground and started beating up the players. "We were shocked when one policeman opened fire. The bullet hit the wickets. They could have hit any of us" he said. Majid added that umpire Danish Ahmad was severely beaten up by the cops. "We will not play KPL in the campus till the cops are punished," he declared. The word spread like wild fire in the campus resulting in panic. Students came out of the classes and held protest demonstrations. Today’s match was being played between Kashmir Greats and the Blossom Cricket. The Superintendent of Police today Abdul Qayoom rushed to the spot and assured the players of strict action against the cops involved. He said firing was a grave issue and the cop who opened fire had been suspended. Meanwhile, Public Relation Officer of University of Kashmir today said that policeman suspected of opening fire in KU campus has been placed under suspension and the Inquiry Committee has been constituted to probe the matter. "Kashmir University wants to make it clear that this afternoon some argument took place between the players of some private cricket club Kashmir Greats and Blossom Cricket Club playing Kashmir Premier League (KPL) phase 1 and KUG men at the university campus grounds . However , the matter was resolved following the constitution of an enquiry committee and immediate suspension of the police official suspected to be involved in the act.
