State Govt sheds crocodile tears on unemployment! | 1.5 lakh vacant posts waiting to be filled up | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 14: Beating its chest on unemployment and lack of avenues for the youth has become second nature for the NC-Congress coalition in the State and yet it is public knowledge that 1.5 lakh posts are lying vacant in various departments and the Government has no legal or technical hitch in fulfilling those posts. Would anyone believe that there are 1500 posts of Assistant Professors lying vacant in the Higher Education Department and these are yet to be referred to the Public Service Commission (PSC) for the selection process? It has become convenient and customary for the State Government to continue the culture of adhocism and avoid proper and legal recruitments because adhoc and contractual appointees always remain at the mercy and whim of the Government. A general impression is being created as if the State Government is doing a great favour to the contractual appointees by renewing their contracts year after year. Nothing could be farther from the truth than this impression. Hundreds of these contractual appointees in various departments including the Higher Education Department have already crossed the upper age limit set for Government recruitments in the State. This has happened because of the non-seriousness and callous approach of the Government towards the future of these appointees. They have been continued and sustained on the lollypop of contractual engagements whereby their prospects of getting appointed against clear vacancies have been marred. It has been the attitude of the successive Governments in the State to continue the culture of contractual appointments even when there are clear vacancies which need to be filled up through a proper and transparent process of selection. If there are 1.5 lakh vacancies waiting to be filled through a proper selection process why doesn't the State Government do it? If the State Government is worried about the future of our unemployed youth why doesn't it give them proper and substantive appointments instead of keeping them happy on the doles of contractual engagements? The State Government because of its inaction and lack of initiative at the proper time has wasted the future and lives of hundreds of highly educated youth who have crossed the threshold for getting appointed on Government jobs. It is now the duty of the State Government to make concessions in the upper age limit of such youths so that they do not miss the bus to seek a Government appointment. The logic forwarded by the Government in its procrastination over the enhancement of the retirement age of its employees from the existing 58 to 60 years is that such a decision would block the employment prospects of thousands of educated and unemployed youth in the State. This logic does not hold water because of the fact that there are 1.5 lakh substantive posts which can be filled up by the State Government whereby employment can be provided to the unemployed youth. The State Government has conveniently decided to sleep on both these crucial issues. Can it afford to live in self-denial for long? |
