Tunnel construction on Mughal Road under process | | | early times report Jammu, May 15: In a bid to keep the Mughal Road, which is under construction, open fot raffic throughout the year the state Government has decided to construct a tunnel. Official sources said that reputed companies were being approach for preparing the multi-crore project so that the Mughal road could become a viable and dependable alternative to the existing 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The sources said that the Srinagar-Jammu highway gets blocked either because of heavy snow or on account of landslides during the winter months and during the monsoon season. Once the highway gets blocked the supply line for essential commodities to Kashmir gets snapped. They said in order to make up for this lacuna a tunnel was being constructed on Mughal road to ensure that both passenger and goods traffic plied on the route throughout the year. Explaining the need for the tunnel engineers said that clearance of medium snowfall othe 63-km Mughal road length was feasible but it was difficult to carry out snow clearance operations other 21-km road stretch as it gets buried under heavy snow. They said bet ween December and March this 21-km long road stretch gets lashed by heavy snow and blizards.Since this road st retch is located at 3000 metres altitude it was not an easy task to carry out snow clearance. Hence the Government is exploring the possibility of const ruction of a tunnel on the Pir Panchal pass from Chattapani to Zaznar in order to keep the Mughal road open fot raffic throughout the season. Senior police officers said that once the tunnel was constructed it would facilitate the task of police and paramilitary forces for insulating the Mughal road against any mischief from the subversives.
