BJP activists stage protest against power cuts
5/15/2012 11:49:58 PM
early times report
JAMMU, May 15: Over 200 BJP Mahila Morcha activists hit the streets in the Winter Capital here today demanding relief from frequent power cuts in the city.
Led by state Party president of the Morcha Sakina Bano the Morcha activists warned to intensify the agitation in case the power supply was not made better in Jammu immediately which has worsened soon after the darbar move.
Anti-government slogans rent the air as the activists, took out a march from the Party's Headquarters to the Power Development Department (PDD) office at Parade here.
Addressing the protestors Mrs Bano accused the PDD of "harassing" the consumers by imposing 5 to 8 hours long power cuts in different areas of Jammu putting the people especially students, old and infirm to many hardships.
"It is surprising how this same Department provides regular electricity to the Chief Minister, his ministerial colleagues and bureaucrats when the Secretariat is in Jammu," she said.
Mrs Bano also accused the PDD of hiking power tariffs in a "dictatorial manner" and threatened to intensify protests against the Power Development Department if regular supply of electricity is not ensured and tariffs reduced.
Addressing the protestors Priya Sethi another senior leader of the organization said that BJP will not sit as a mute spectator to peoples hardships faced on account of long duration power cuts and if the power supply was not improved immediately the Morcha will give call for indefinite agitation.
She said during the Winter Chief Minister snapped power supply to his residential Buglow at Srinagar as people in Sumemr Capital also experienced long duration power crisis. But he did not show such generosity in Jammu while many areas have plunged into darkness after darbar move.
Other smaller outfits like the Kranti Dal, Hindustan Shiv Sena and Beopar Mandal also held protests over the issue in different parts of the city.
