Jammu's Political Scene Infighting in, unpopularity of Cong unlikely to benefit BJP

JAMMU, May 15: The people of Jammu Pradesh are seething with anger. They have many problems but the NC-Congress coalition Government has failed to address their concerns and mitigate their hardships. Their problems are political, economic and social and they feel that they have never been considered part and parcel of the State and that they have never been given their due in the State's socio-economic and political processes. They are fed up with the existing political arrangement. Everyone in Jammu Pradesh, barring those close to the establishment, is feeling disgusted and abandoned. They are angry more with the Congress than the NC. They dismiss the NC as a Kashmir-centric outfit and hence, do not expect justice and fair play from it.
The complaint of the people of Jammu Pradesh that the Congress has let down them by allowing the NC to ride roughshod and perpetrate injustice after injustice on them and further develop Kashmir at their cost cannot be brushed aside. Their complaint is genuine. The Congress has undoubtedly let them down by bartering their interests to keep the people of Kashmir on their right side, although they seldom vote for the Congress party. The support-base of the Congress party in Kashmir is confined to just 3 to 4 constituencies and that is not because the people of these constituencies like the Congress but because of the popularity of the local leaders who have been representing these constituencies in the Assembly for quite sometime now, notwithstanding the fact that all the three Congress leaders are accused of committing this sin or that sin. The Congress is in power not because of Kashmir.
It is the people of Jammu Pradesh who have invariably reposed their faith in the Congress. The fact of the matter is that the Congress has been sharing political power in the State since 2002 primarily because of the people of Jammu Pradesh whom the Congress party and the Congress Ministers have repeatedly ditched. The Congress high command and the Government of India are responsible for all that the local Congress leaders and Ministers have been doing to harm the people of Jammu Pradesh and appease and pamper Kashmir.
The political situation as it prevails these days in Jammu Pradesh is not at all inspiring for the Congress party. In fact, anti-Congress wave is sweeping this ignored region. There are reasons to believe that the situation would become more adverse for the Congress party in the days to come. Because neither the Congress party nor the Congress Ministers are, it seems, prepared to refashion their approach taking into consideration the needs of the people of Jammu Pradesh.
The truth is that the existing political scene in Jammu Pradesh suits the BJP and the Panthers Party. The Panthers Party may improve its position as and when elections are held because its political agenda is quite impressive and attractive. It is better placed vis-a-vis the BJP. The BJP is a divided house with 7 of the 11 suspended legislators working day and night to ensure the destruction of their parent organization and the remain 4 legislators not doing anything that could induce the people of this Pradesh to come forward and join the BJP. As far as the BJP as an organization is concerned, it is leaderless, weak, directionless and issueless. Most of the leaders of the BJP have failed to click and establish rapport with people. In fact, most of the people do not know who runs the organization and what does the party stand for. Besides, the BJP has, unlike the Panthers Party, no Jammu Pradesh-specific agenda.
It is important to note that in at least 24 Assembly constituencies in Jammu Pradesh, the Congress, the BJP and the Panthers Party competes with each other. There are Hindu-majority constituencies. In the remaining 13 assembly constituencies, it is the NC, Congress and the PDP which competes with each other. The BJP and the Panthers Party have little or no say in these Assembly segments.
