Beating Retreat is a centuries old military tradition dating from the days when troops disengaged from battle at sunset. As soon as the bugles sounded ‘Retreat’, the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms and withdrew from the battlefield. It is for this reason that the custom of standing still during the sounding of calls has been retained to this day. Colours and standards are cased and flags lowered at Retreat.
Drum beats are a relic of days when troops, billeted in town and cities, were recalled, to their quarters at an appointed hour in the evening.
The combination of these traditions has resulted in the ceremony of Beating Retreat. The ceremony now also serves as a grand finale to the Republic Day celebrations and in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, it has emerged as an added attraction of the celebrations.
