Why is Mustafa Kamaal silent? | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 16: During his tenure as spokesman of the National Conference, Dr Mustafa Kamaal issued a series of ‘controversial’ statements. He challenged totality of accession, accused New Delhi of treating Jammu Kashmir as a colony, castigated the Congress party and lashed out at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). A stunned Dr Farooq had to relieve him of the responsibility. Kamaal accused New Delhi of hurling grenades in Kashmir. He did not spare the Army as well. And last but not the least; he accused New Delhi of cheating Sher-e-Kashmir. "The 1975 Accord was not signed", he claimed. Farooq who wanted Kamaal to do some hard hitting at the PDP had to change his mind. The Cabinet, JKPCC chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz and many others urged him to rein in Kamaal. On Sher-e-Kashmir's anniversary, an angry Farooq scolded Kamaal. He cautioned him against issuing `controversial' statements. "Mind your words", an angry Farooq told Kamaal. Expressing his anger during the above mentioned function, Farooq said: "Whenever Kamaal issues a statement, the media attribute it to me. But why should I do that." Kamal who was also present at the function listened silently and did not show any reaction. One of his statements was ridiculed by senior NC workers. Kamaal said his father wanted to die in prison to "fight last war with India". "On his death-bed, Sheikh Sahib said he did not want to die in his home. He told me that he wanted to die in prison to fight last war with India. He had realized that New Delhi had ditched him time and again,"Kamaal said Sheikh did not die before leaving a message for the people of Kashmir: "Don't bow. Keep fighting for your rights and never let anybody exploit you." Kamaala was removed but his removal almost caused a vertical wedge in the National Conference. His statements had made him popular. Farooq had to recall him. However, surprisingly, Kamaal has not opened his mouth since his coming back. Kamaal, according to people close to him, cannot remain silent for long. Sooner or later, he will come out to embarrass National Conference and its leadership. |
